Is your dog one of Vancouver’s most popular breeds?
Could you guess what Vancouver’s most popular dog breed is?
Last year for the first time, French Bulldogs entered Canada’s top 10 most popular dog breeds and we can’t say we were surprised – Vancouver dog owners have loved Frenchies for years!
The Canadian Kennel Club’s annual list showed that once again the gentle and loving Labrador Retriever was Canada’s most popular breed – but a surprise new entry was the Portuguese Water Dog.
Featuring for the first time since The Canadian Kennel Club (Canada’s primary registry for purebred dogs) began their records, the Portuguese Water Dog entered the top 10, just narrowly beating the Miniature Schnauzer to take the 10th spot.

So, this list got us thinking. How does Canada’s top breeds compare to Vancouver’s?
We think we have a pretty good idea of the most popular breeds in the city thanks to our amazing PawSwap community.
We meet a lot of local dog owners and adorable pups at our PawSwap Meet ups and events, so here are the breeds we think are Vancouver’s most popular!
Labrador Retrievers – Gentle, family friendly and outgoing, these gorgeous dogs love the outdoors and are perfect companions for Vancouverites
Corgis – The hottest dogs of 2019, and definitely a favourite among Vancouver dog owners. Active and animated, in their own minds they are big dogs in small bodies and they love to be involved in everything.
French Bulldogs - A Frenchie loves people and will seek out anyone who is willing to provide a lap. They are friendly, affectionate and love attention.
Terriers – Terriers range from the highly energetic short-haired Jack Russell to the long, silky-haired Yorkie. Highly intelligent and trainable they are perfect city dogs which is why Vancouverites love them!
Collies – Vancouver’s most popular collie is the medium-sized border collie. Playful, hardworking, intelligent and athletic, they are great companions for children.
Shepherds – Reserved but extremely loyal and protective, they are intelligent, highly trainable and make wonderful family pets.
Shih Tzus – Friendly and playful, they are well suited to small living spaces. Loyal, affectionate, outgoing and cute – they are a perfect choice for Vancouver dog owners.
Schnauzers – Quick learners and adaptable, schnauzers can be miniature, standard, or giant, but are always extremely cute with their distinctive beard! We see a lot of Miniature Schnauzers in Vancouver, probably because they are just as happy living in a city apartment as in the country!
More about PawSwap...
PawSwap is an Application that makes finding trusted pet sitters easy and inexpensive (or free). By developing a platform that allows dog owners to create and customize their trusted list of pet sitters (called "Pack"), and introducing our own Pay-It-Forward Points system, finding a trusted pet sitter nearby has never been easier or more affordable.
Created for dog owners that work long hours, members can add their Neighbours to their Pack on the platform, and broadcast a message whenever they need a hand. Friends and Neighbours earn Points, which they accumulate and spend on pet sitting services for their own dog or towards pet products and services with our partners.
