While most airlines accommodate small dogs weighing up to 20 pounds, this leaves out medium and large breeds. Moreover, regulations mandating that dogs fit comfortably within a pet carrier further complicate travel for taller dogs, such as Italian Greyhounds.

However, there are alternatives available. Some airlines offer more lenient policies for dogs traveling in the cabin, providing a more comfortable experience for both you and your furry friend compared to cargo travel.

Many of these airlines operate on a semi-private basis, although their fares may be slightly higher than those of commercial carriers. Nevertheless, the additional cost often proves worthwhile for the peace of mind gained by keeping your dog nearby during the flight.

Below is a compilation of airlines that permit large dogs to fly in the cabin, along with answers to common queries regarding in-cabin travel with big dogs.

Aero

Similar to JSX, Aero operates as a semi-private airline, boasting luxurious amenities such as leather seats on small airplanes catering to up to 16 passengers. Although their fares are higher, the comfort and convenience justify the expense. Presently, Aero offers flights from Los Angeles to various destinations in the US and Europe.

Small pets weighing up to 20 pounds can travel in a carrier for a fee of $300, while medium and large pets require the purchase of an extra seat.

JSX

JSX, an independent air carrier based in the United States, offers a "hop-on jet service" primarily in the southern region, with flights spanning from the east to the west coasts. Departing from private terminals, JSX flights provide a hassle-free experience without the congestion of traditional airports.

What's more, passengers need only arrive 30 minutes before departure.

JSX welcomes pets weighing up to 65 pounds in the cabin. Small dogs and cats can travel in a carrier free of charge, while medium and large dogs can occupy an additional seat, provided they are well-behaved and leashed.

Tradewind Aviation

Tradewind Aviation, headquartered in Oxford, Connecticut, operates scheduled flights across the US and Caribbean, making it an excellent choice for vacation travel. Pets of all sizes, including large breeds, are welcome aboard Tradewind Aviation's spacious cabins.

A maximum of one party with pets per flight is allowed, with larger dogs requiring the purchase of an additional seat.

Surf Air

Surf Air offers jet membership services throughout the United States, featuring both scheduled semi-private flights and on-demand jet services. Memberships range from $199 to $3,000 per month, granting access to various flight plans.

Pets weighing up to 100 pounds are permitted on Surf Air flights, subject to operator policies and consent. Passengers must notify Surf Air and purchase a separate flight pass for their pet at least two days in advance.

BLADE

BLADE offers passengers the option to book by-the-seat flights across the Northeast and West Coast or charter flights worldwide. In addition to semi-private flight services, BLADE provides alternative transportation modes such as helicopters and seaplanes.

On by-the-seat flights, pets under 25 pounds can sit on their owner's lap for a fee of $95, while heavier dogs require an additional seat. Chartered flights accommodate pets at no extra cost.

K9 JETS

K9 JETS offers a unique solution for pet owners, allowing their beloved companions to accompany them in the cabin of a luxurious private jet instead of being relegated to the cargo hold of a commercial airplane. This service ensures a relaxed and stress-free environment for both you and your furry friends. One of the standout features of K9 JETS is that crates are not required for dogs, regardless of their size. However, our feline friends must remain in their carriers for the duration of the flight. K9 JETS operates flights to various destinations usually from New Jersey or Los Angeles, including Dallas, Dublin, Florida from New Jersey, Frankfurt, Hawaii, Lisbon, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Milan, New Jersey, and Paris. They even fly to Dubai from London. Flights are pricey, but if you have the funds, this may be an appropriate option!

There have been whispers of alternative choices available for individuals traveling with large dogs. With the increasing number of people embracing pets as part of their families, the demand for pet-friendly travel has surged. Many pet owners have apparently been uniting to arrange private charters, taking on the responsibility of planning routes and schedules, as well as dividing the flight costs among themselves.

Word on the street is that these private charter flights are typically scheduled on a monthly basis, operating between Canada and Europe. While tickets are priced at several thousand dollars, you'll have the opportunity to fly alongside fellow dog enthusiasts, ensuring a safe and comfortable journey for your furry companion.

Flying in cargo...

Okay, not the best option, but sometimes unavoidable. Situations where your dog must be transported via cargo, thorough preparation becomes crucial. Anticipating and addressing potential challenges beforehand can significantly enhance the travel experience for both you and your pet.

To prepare your dog for his or her journey, consider several key factors. First, familiarize yourself with commands that can aid in managing your dog during the flight. It's also important to arrive well in advance at the airport to allow sufficient time for pet check-in at the gate. Providing your dog with ample exercise and bathroom breaks before departure can help promote a sense of calmness during the journey. In addition, asking the airline if it's acceptable to leave your dogs favourite toy and/or blanket make all the difference! Lastly, seek guidance from your veterinarian if you have concerns. They can offer medication or tailored advice to address any worries about your pet’s well-being during travel.

<![CDATA[How do I tell an airline that I am travelling with my dog?]]>https://www.godoggo.app/post/how-do-i-tell-an-airline-that-i-am-travelling-with-my-dog65d51329a1122218b516157bTue, 20 Feb 2024 21:05:46 GMTAli JordanTraveling with your furry companion can be an exciting adventure, but it also requires careful planning and preparation to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey for both you and your dog. Whether you're embarking on a cross-country road trip or taking to the skies for a vacation getaway, navigating the ins and outs of pet travel requires attention to detail and an understanding of airline policies, safety protocols, and pet-friendly accommodations.

In this article, we'll explore essential tips and guidelines for traveling with your dog, from booking your flight and preparing your pet for travel to navigating airport procedures and ensuring your dog's comfort and well-being throughout the journey. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or embarking on your first adventure with your four-legged friend, these tips will help make your travel experience enjoyable and memorable for both you and your beloved canine companion.

 1. Check the airline's pet policy: Start by reviewing the pet policy of the airline you're flying with. This information is usually available on the airline's website or can be obtained by contacting their customer service department. Familiarize yourself with the specific requirements, restrictions, and fees associated with traveling with a pet.

 2. Make a reservation: When booking your flight, inform the airline that you'll be traveling with a dog. Most airlines have a specific process for booking pet travel, which may involve making a reservation for your pet in addition to your own ticket. Be prepared to provide details about your pet, such as its size, weight, and carrier dimensions.

 3. Prepare necessary documentation: Depending on the airline and your destination, you may need to provide documentation for your dog, such as a health certificate or proof of vaccinations. Make sure you have all the required paperwork completed and organized before your travel date.

 4. Arrive early: On the day of your flight, arrive at the airport early to allow ample time for check-in and pet-related procedures. Follow the airline's instructions for checking in your pet and ensure that your pet is comfortably settled in its carrier before boarding the flight.

 5. Going through security: Take your pet out of the carrier, and carry them with you as you go through the security check.

By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth and stress-free travel experience for both you and your dog.

<![CDATA[Jet-Set Pups: Top Dog Carriers for Stress-Free Canadian Flights]]>https://www.godoggo.app/post/flying-with-your-dog-here-are-two-of-our-favourite-dog-carriers-for-canada-flights65175c64e1056d3401877259Fri, 29 Sep 2023 23:58:55 GMTAli JordanWhen it comes to finding the ideal travel bag for your four-legged companion during your journeys, buyer beware is the name of the game.

We embarked on a quest to discover the best options available, and along the way, we stumbled upon a surprising discovery: many bags listed as "airline approved" on Amazon fell short of the mark, especially when it came to Canada.

It's crucial to remember that just because a bag claims to be "airline approved," it doesn't necessarily hold true in Canada.

One prime example is the Akinerri Airline Approved Pet Carrier*, which - despite its name - doesn't meet the requirements for Canadian airlines.

While some Canadians mentioned in their reviews that they successfully used these carriers on airlines, it's important to understand that this could be due to attendants not thoroughly checking the carrier's compliance.

All it takes is one diligent attendant deciding to inspect, and your entire trip could be disrupted.

The key takeaway here is simple: don't take the label at face value.

When choosing a dog carrier for air travel in Canada, delve deeper into the specific requirements set by Canadian airlines to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey for both you and your furry friend.

So, which crate do we recommend?

1. Sherpa PetDelta Carrier

First on the list, and our go-to top pick, is the Sherpa carrier, available on Amazon*.

While it may come with a slightly higher price tag, we believe that the long-term benefits and quality make it a worthwhile investment.

Although the manufacturer specifies a weight limit of up to 16 lbs, many reviews had slightly larger dogs. It seems longer dogs would be okay in this specific bag, whereas if your dog has a lot of height, the bag may not be the best.

The bag also has a long handle strap, which other bags either charged more for or lacked, and the quality is bar none the best we could find by reading reviews.

In summary, although it may come with a slightly higher price tag, the long-term benefits and quality outweighs the investment, in our opinion. The quality, as attested by countless positive reviews, is truly unmatched and stands as the best we could find.

2. Sherpa 2-in-1 Backpack

Another, more budget-friendly option we came across is the Sherpa 2-in-1 Backpack*.

We found this bag particularly appealing because of its backpack-style carrying option.

After spending hours at the airport with your dog, the strain on your shoulder can become quite noticeable, and this bag solves that problem.

While this feature offers a practical solution. It's worth mentioning that your dog still needs to comfortably fit under the seat in front of you, adhering to airline regulations.

We couldn't find any significant negative reviews to report on for this backpack, but we can't provide an endorsement as we haven't had the opportunity to test it ourselves - at $49 though, it may be worth the risk to give it a try.

To sum it all up, when it comes to traveling with your dog, your choice of carrier can make or break the journey.

The key takeaway is clear: thorough research and adherence to airline guidelines are essential when selecting a dog carrier for air travel in Canada, ensuring a smooth and stress-free journey for both you and your loyal four-legged companion.

The response was overwhelming, and we're here to provide you with all the answers you need.

Have you ever wondered about the ins and outs of traveling with your furry companion? From size restrictions for in-cabin and cargo travel to dealing with anxious pups and navigating airport security, flying with your dog can be an adventure in itself.

In this post, we'll address your top queries and concerns about flying with your dog. We'll cover everything from airline recommendations and preparing your dog for travel to the cost of pet-friendly flights and the changing landscape of Emotional Support Dog regulations. So, fasten your seatbelts (or should we say "collars"), as we take you on a journey through the skies with your beloved four-legged friend. Whether you're a seasoned pet traveler or a first-time flyer, this guide has something for everyone. Let's dive in and make your next adventure with your pup a smooth and enjoyable one!

1. What are the size restrictions for cabin vs. cargo?

Size restrictions for dogs in the cabin vary depending on the airline. Typically, dogs in the cabin must fit comfortably in an airline-approved pet carrier*. This carrier then fits under the seat in front of you. The one we used on our most recent travel was the Sherpa bag, which we find is the best option due to their 100% guarantee!

The weight limit for in cabin pets typically ranges from 15 to 22 pounds, and carrier dimensions must meet specific guidelines set by the airline. We've found that the two best Airlines to fly with your dog are Flair Air and Air Transat, especially for dogs that are near the 22 lbs mark. For more information on airlines, check out a recent Instagram post where we covered this topic here.

Dogs weighing up to 100 pounds or more can travel in the cargo hold. Over 100 lbs? Keep on reading for some other options that are new for dog owners.

Our top pick for an airline approved dog carrier, found on Amazon.ca*

2. How should you prepare your dog for travel?

Preparing your dog for travel should be done weeks in advance and is crucial in ensuring your dog is comfortable in their carrier or crate. Start by gradually introducing your dog to the carrier, making it a positive and safe space. Pro tip: treat training is a great place to start.

Next, take short car rides while your pup is in his or her bag to get your dog used to motion, and practice going in and out of the carrier at home. This will be an important training lesson for when you're required to take your dog out before security.

Be sure to consult with your vet for any specific recommendations regarding your dog's health and travel needs as well.

3. Are there any flights for my 120lbs calm/obedient/boring puppers to take in cabin?

Yes! There are options for larger dogs to fly in-cabin. Some airlines, like K9Jets, specialize in accommodating larger dogs. However, it's essential to check with individual airlines for their specific size and weight restrictions and inquire about in-cabin options for bigger dogs.

4. What to do when they are anxious? How do you train them?

While no one on our team has ever had to worry about an anxious dog, it's always wise to consider the possibility of anxiety during travel - especially as it's not uncommon for dogs. To ensure a smoother journey for your furry friend, take a cautious approach. Begin with gradual exposure to travel, using positive reinforcement to help your dog become accustomed to the experience. Avoid feeding your dog immediately before the flight to reduce the chances of motion sickness or discomfort. Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise before the flight to help them relax during travel, and allow them to relieve themselves before boarding. Bringing along a familiar toy or comfort item can provide reassurance, and consulting with your veterinarian before flying is always a good idea. And finally, consult with your veterinarian for advice on sedatives, anti-nausea medications, or natural remedies if you're concerned about your dog's anxiety.

These measures can contribute to a more comfortable travel experience for your beloved canine companion.

5. Airline inflight limits seem to have gotten really strict/small - what do you do?

The rules and regulations around Emotional Support Dogs has recently changed, but the other rules seems to be the same, if not a bit more lax. For example, in the past passengers were required to weigh the dog during time of check in. As we checked in online with Flair Air, we weren't asked to do this. They did have a weigh scale before boarding, and we saw some passengers were asked to weigh their bags, but we were not hassled. We believe this is because our dog was in the right size carrier - not to mention he is within the size requirement.

6. How much does it cost?

Fees typically range from $75 to $100 each way ($150 - $200 round trip). If you're interested in diving deeper into pricing for popular airlines, we've recently published an article that includes rates for the top 5 airlines in the industry.

7. Which airline would you recommend?

Our team's most recent travel experience was with Flair Air, and it was seamless. One noteworthy convenience is their option to add your dog to your reservation online after booking, eliminating the need for lengthy phone waits. This user-friendly feature made our journey planning exceptionally convenient.

Note: Some airlines may require a phone call to book a ticket for your dog. Since the number of available pet seats is often limited, it’s a good idea to secure your dog’s spot right after booking your own ticket. This way, you’ll have plenty of flexibility to accommodate your furry friend on your flight, and it can make your travel plans more convenient and enjoyable. If you’re uncertain about availability, you can also reach out to the airline before booking to check if there are spots open for pets on your chosen flight.

8. Are you allowed to walk your dog through the airport?

We spotted quite a few dogs taking leisurely walks around the airport! It appears that, as long as your canine companion is well-behaved, well-trained, and under control, it’s generally permissible to let them roam a bit outside of their travel crate. While this has been our experience during our dog-friendly travels, it’s important to note that rules and policies can evolve over time. However, if someone were to ask, it would probably just mean gently guiding your dog back into their crate.

9. What should you do when going through security?

You can either walk your dog on leash through the security check with you, or you can carry your dog.

10. Was your pup with you at your seat?

Our pup was comfortably under the seat in front of us when flying. We were allowed to open the crate to administer medicine and/or give him some water. Our flight was packed, and we weren't beside the most friendliest of traveller, so we kept our dog inside his crate. However, in previous experiences with more relaxed flights, flight attendants have sometimes allowed us to let our dog stretch his legs. It's worth noting that these instances occurred before the pandemic, and while we wouldn't rely on this option, we've heard similar stories from other pet owners - especially when on an empty flight.

11. What airline did you fly with?

We flew with Flair Air this time around, but have flown with Air Canada and West Jet in the past. We've even had someone on the team take their dog to Vegas once - which is a very dog friendly spot with lots of restaurants that allow dogs right at your table!

12. How do Emotional Support dogs travel?

Travel regulations for Emotional Support Dogs have recently changed. In the past, they could travel without a crate, but this is no longer the case. Emotional Support Dogs must now adhere to the same cabin and cargo regulations as other dogs. The only difference seems to be that Emotional Support dogs can travel for free on some airlines (Flair Air being one of them). Be sure to check with your airline for any specific requirements and documentation needed for traveling with an Emotional Support Dog.

Required documents usually involve:

· Document from a physician or medical health professional who is licensed and in good standing with their governing body advising that the person requires an emotional support animal to accommodate their disability.

· A veterinary certificate that includes the following:

· Identifies the specific emotional support dog by name and breed.

· Identifies the person with a disability who relies on that dog as an emotional support dog.

· attests that the emotional support dog is healthy enough to travel; free from contagious diseases, ticks, and fleas; and current on its vaccinations; and

· states whether the veterinarian has any knowledge of inappropriate behaviour exhibited by the emotional support dog, including aggressive behaviour, excessive whining or barking, or causing injury to others.

13. Which airlines allow dogs in cabin?

Remember, these policies can change, so it’s always best to double check with the airlines before traveling. It’s also important to note, while some European airlines do allow your dog to come out of his or her bag, Canadian Airlines require dogs to be kept in their bag, under the seat in front of you. You are allowed to provide your pet with water or food while inside the carrier. And finally, all weight restrictions above include the weight of the carrier.

Creating your Dog-Friendly Home

Welcoming a furry friend into your life is an incredibly joyous experience. Dogs, known for their unconditional love and loyalty, quickly become cherished members of our families. To ensure their well-being and happiness, it's essential to create a dog-friendly environment in your home. In this article, we'll explore the top tips for transforming your space into a haven for your four-legged companion.

1. Safe and Secure Spaces

Dogs, especially puppies and adventurous breeds, have an innate curiosity that can sometimes lead them into mischief. Begin by dog-proofing your home. This means securing cabinets, trash cans, and any potentially hazardous areas. Investing in baby gates to block off certain rooms can help create a safe and controlled environment for your pup.

2. Comfort is Key

Just like us, dogs appreciate a cozy place to relax. Consider getting a comfortable dog bed or crate where your pup can rest. Be sure to place it in a quiet, low-traffic area to give them a sense of security.

3. Proper Nutrition

A healthy diet is the foundation of a happy and active dog. Consult your vet to determine the best food for your dog's breed and age. Remember to provide fresh water at all times.

4. Regular Exercise

Dogs need regular exercise to stay happy and healthy. Set aside time for daily walks, playtime, and perhaps even some training sessions. A tired dog is often a well-behaved one.

5. Socialization Opportunities

Dogs are social animals and benefit from interaction with other dogs. Consider visiting a local dog park or arranging playdates with other dog owners to keep your pup engaged and mentally stimulated.

6. Grooming and Hygiene

Maintaining your dog's hygiene is essential for their comfort and health. Regular grooming sessions, including brushing and baths, are necessary. Don't forget about dental care and nail trimming!

7. Pet-Friendly Furniture and Décor

When selecting furniture and décor, choose pet-friendly materials that can withstand the occasional scratch or fur. This ensures your home remains stylish while accommodating your dog's presence.

8. Training and Obedience

Invest time in training your dog. Basic commands like sit, stay, and come are not only useful but also make your dog feel more secure when they understand your expectations.

9. Healthcare Routine

Regular vet visits are crucial to monitor your dog's health and receive vaccinations. Additionally, discuss flea and tick prevention with your vet to keep your dog comfortable year-round.

10. Love and Attention

Lastly, never underestimate the power of love and attention. Spend quality time with your dog, shower them with affection, and make them feel like an integral part of your family.

Creating a dog-friendly home is not just about accommodating your furry friend; it's about enriching both of your lives. By following these tips, you'll not only provide a safe and comfortable environment for your dog but also strengthen the bond you share. Remember, a happy dog is a loyal and loving companion, and a dog-friendly home is a harmonious one.

<![CDATA[Give a dog a cone? The real scoop on ice cream and your dog]]>https://www.godoggo.app/post/give-a-dog-a-cone-the-real-scoop-on-ice-cream-and-your-dog640f5e91faf6fb56f3f562c2Fri, 21 Jul 2023 01:26:50 GMTGoDoggoIs it okay to share an ice cream with your pup, or should you be avoiding it altogether?

It’s a summer sight as common as the sandcastle or Slurpie: Vancouver dogs lapping up ice cream like it’s the last treat on earth.

“My husky loves a weekly cone from DQ,” one downtown dog owner tells OhMyDog! “But her absolute favourite thing is a pint of strawberry Haagen Dazs.”

In fact, most dogs are so crazy for the cold and creamy stuff, many local coffee shops, food trucks, and pet stores offer mini ice cream bowls and cones for dogs. Stores have come a long way from offering just a bowl of communal warm water.

Bee Laidlaw of Global Pet Food in Burnaby sells doggie ice cream scoops that are “dog safe” as a popular summer treat.

“It’s a plain vanilla, natural cane sugar with salmon oil and duck kibble and sometimes liver sprinkles,” she tells OhMyDog! And yes, she’s tried it herself out of curiosity, and “won’t again,” she laughs.

Lick with caution: the potential dangers of ice cream

Laidlaw asks that owners be aware of any extra sweetness you’re feeding your dog.

“The main culprit in ice cream is the sugar content, and that can be trouble for diabetes and tooth decay,” she explains.

However, buying your dog sugar-free ice cream is not the answer. According to Dogs Naturally many sugarless ice creams contain an artificial sweetener called Xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.

Vets also agree that ingredients like chocolate can be very poisonous to dogs, so it’s crucial to watch what you share with your pet. The plainer the better.

And most importantly, and often overlooked, is the fact that dogs just aren’t designed to process dairy products.

Canines lack the digestive enzymes humans have to break down dairy - essentially making them mostly lactose intolerant. So while a cold cone might seem cute in the moment, nausea and diarrhoea aren’t as charming later on.

Observe how your dog reacts with a small sample and decide if, as an occasional reward, ice cream is a keeper.

They all scream (or bark) for ice cream

“Let’s face it, dogs want ice cream and owners are going to buy it anyway,” says Yvette Cuthburt, owner of Rocky Point Ice Cream in Port Moody.

Rocky Point serves a whopping 18,000 dogs a year, and Cuthbert says they were one of the first to consider true doggie cones. That was over 20 years ago, before it was a four-legged fashion to eat ice cream out on the town.

“Dogs pull their owners across the park to come to us,” she says. Some people tell her they can’t even say the word 'park' without their dogs begging for a cone. Many have to take alternate routes to avoid the aromas.

Cuthbert plays by the healthy cone rules, offering plain, all-natural ice cream, with kibble inclusions, and topped with a Milk Bone. She’s currently finalizing a deal with Vancouver dog cookie company Dogkie for new toppings, making their dog cones 100% local.

“We have more dogs than people on Instagram eating our ice cream,” she says. “Owners bring their dogs for birthdays, for rewards, and we often see old dogs come in for their ‘last cone’ which is always touching to see.”

There’s no denying it, everyone loves ice cream. And according to Cuthbert, dogs share the same problem we have.

“Moderation. That’s the key.”

<![CDATA[10 must-have items to pack for your next dog-friendly beach day]]>https://www.godoggo.app/post/10-must-have-items-to-pack-for-your-next-dog-friendly-beach-day640f5e89faf6fb56f3f56205Thu, 13 Jul 2023 22:47:48 GMTGoDoggoEverything you need to pack in your beach bag to keep your pup safe and comfortable.

Vancouver is blessed with some amazing dog-friendly beaches, and we all know that pups love a beach day just as much as we do during the summer months. Whether it's swimming, rolling around in the sand or playing fetch, a long day at the beach can be real treat for our four-legged friends, but to ensure the trip runs smoothly for you both, there's some planning involved. But don't worry, we've made it easy for you with this list of must-have items to pack in your beach bag to ensure both you and your pup have a fun, safe and happy day together! --- While the extreme heatwave may be over, the weather is still hot so taking summer safety precautions while your pup is in the sun is extremely important. ---

1. Sunscreen for both of you

This goes without saying, sunburn is never fun for anyone, so the same way (hopefully!) you wouldn't go to the beach without packing some sunscreen for yourself, you should also be packing some doggy sunscreen for your pup. Not only is sunburn painful for pups, but using sunscreen specifically formulated for your dog can lower their risk of developing serious sun-related medical issues in the future. It’s vital that you only use formulas that are specifically intended for dogs, so be sure to do your research - you can find some good tips here.

2. Dog Sun Tent

In case all the shady spots are taken, it's best to be prepared and a simple pop-up tent can be a safe haven for your pup when the sun is getting a little too much. And, you can buy compact, foldable versions of these tents that easily pack inside your beach dog.

3. Floating Toys

A fun, floating toy can entertain your pup for hours, so whether it's a flying disc, a floating fetch ball or rubber 'skipping stones', packing a special toy for your pup to enjoy in the water is a great start for a stress-free beach day.

4. Pet Microfiber Towel

If your pup loves to swim, then packing a high quality microfiber is a must. Lightweight, quick drying and gentle on your pup's fur, a microfiber towel will be a dog owner's best friend when playtime is over.

Check out our highly recommended Clean & Cozy towel from GoDoggo Shop that dog owners have been raving about.

5. Snacks for you, and treats for your pup

You wont want to forget food for your beach day, especially if you're going to be there until sunset, so don't forget to pack some tasty and convenient meals and snacks in your beach bag for both you and your pup. We recommend: Beach day meals can still be convenient and still nutritious, but when we don't have lots of planning time, we love the Vegano - a plant-based meal kit delivery service that has all the directions and perfectly portioned ingredients ready for you to make things super simple. As for you pup, they'll be sure to be doing lots of running and playing, so to help keep them energized and reward them for being such a good beach day companion, treat them to some Sit Stay Raw treats and chews!

6. Portable Dog Water Bottle

Hours in the sun means you need to be extra diligent to ensure your pup stays hydrated and drinks enough water throughout the day. There are many portable dog water bottles designed to make this extra easy, with a bowl-like top for your dog to drink from without spills and dribbles.

7. Picnic Blanket or Comfy Chairs

If a beach day is going to be enjoyable, comfort is key so a high quality picnic blanket that's big enough for both you and your pup to lay on, or a good quality outdoor chair that you can sit back and relax on is always essential. We recommend: We love the Lazy Bear collection from KUMA Outdoor Gear, and highly recommend picking up the Lazy Bear Chair for yourself and the Lazy Bear Dog Bed for your pup, so you can be comfortable, and matching!

If you're staying to watch the sunset, we highly recommend Kanata Blanket Co., a Richmond based company, which makes beautiful, cosy wool blankets perfect for cosying up with your furry bestie.

8. Portable Shower

Beaches are great fun, but sand and water don't make a great combination when it comes to keeping your pup clean. Sand gets anywhere, so if you have to get your pup back in the car afterwards, a portable dog shower a great investment.

9. Pet Wipes

If you don't have a portable shower, then packing some grooming dog wipes is a fast and simple solution to cleaning up your pup's coat and paws after hours playing in the sand.

10. Comfy clothing

You'll want to be comfortable for your beach day in an outfit that is ready for adventure and whatever else the day might have in store for you! Whether it's rolling around n the sand with your pup, or playing some frisbee or ball games, comfort is key. We recommend: You can be comfortable and look good at the same time with DUER, whose products combine fashion with function.

Bonus

While we wouldn't exactly call this a beach essential, the fact that you can now legally drink in some beaches and parks in Vancouver means you can enjoy a nice, cold beer in the sun while your pup relaxes by your side

We recommend: You can't go wrong with choosing a local brewery for your takeout drinks, especially when they are also dog-friendly! We love Camp Beer Co., founded by 100% local ownership with grassroots in the home brewing community and a strong passion for craft beer.

Here's a breakdown of the dog-friendly patio regulations in 4 Canadian provinces:

British Columbia's dog-friendly patio rules

In British Columbia, operators of food service establishments have a duty to accommodate individuals with disabilities who require guide or service dogs, irrespective of formal certification. The B.C. Human Rights Code protects people with disabilities who rely on guide and service dogs, even if the animal is not certified. However, the policy regarding pet dogs on outdoor dining areas does not extend to guide and service dogs. While an operator may permit an animal on the premises, it must be determined by an Environmental Health Officer (EHO) that the animal does not pose a health hazard. Other jurisdictions, such as New York City and the State of California, serve as models for B.C. in terms of allowing pet dogs in outdoor dining areas.

Policy on Pet Dogs on Outdoor Dining Areas:

By following these procedures, an operator is likely to avoid causing a health hazard and can generally comply with their obligations under the Food Premises Regulation. Before allowing pet dogs into an outdoor dining area, an operator must:

1. Update the establishment’s sanitation plan to reflect an operator’s responsibilities around sanitation procedures. The plan must be submitted to and approved by an EHO before pet dogs are allowed into outdoor dining areas.

2. Ensure food or drinks are not prepared, nor any utensils stored, in the outdoor dining areas.

3. Provide a separate entrance where a pet dog can enter without going through any indoor areas of the establishment to reach the outdoor dining area.

4. Ensure a pet dog is under the control of its owner using a leash, harness or carrier and kept at ground level at all times. In addition, the operator should post a sign at the entrance to the outdoor dining area, stating, “Dogs are permitted in outdoor dining areas and owners are responsible for controlling their dogs at all times”.

5. Ensure a pet dog does not eat or drink from the establishment’s reusable dishware or utensils.

6. Ensure surfaces that have been contaminated by animal waste (e.g., feces, urine or vomit) or other by-product are cleaned and sanitized immediately by staff of the establishment in an area separate from the establishment’s dishwashing area.

7. Require any employee who comes into contact with a pet dog, its accessories, serving containers for the pet dog or animal waste wash their hands before undertaking any of their regular work duties. An employee’s hygiene instructions must address hand washing after handling or dealing with a pet. 8. Ensure employee clothing is free of dog dander, fur or body fluids. Operators should familiarize themselves with local bylaws, where applicable, that limit certain breeds of dog from being in public without a muzzle or prohibit pets on outdoor dining areas.

Alberta's dog-friendly patio rules

As of May 25, 2022, amendments to the Food Regulation in Alberta grant food establishment operators the choice to allow patrons' dogs on outdoor eating areas, including patios, without requiring approval from a public health inspector. Operators must still adhere to the Food Regulation and comply with local municipal bylaws regarding dogs. Operators do not need approval from Alberta Health Services to permit dogs on patios, as long as the dog accesses the patio without entering an interior food handling area. Dogs must be under physical control at all times, using a leash, carrier, or other restraint.

Ontario's dog-friendly patio rules

In Ontario, amendments made to the Health Protection and Promotion Act on January 1, 2020, have relaxed restrictions on dogs being allowed on patios and certain indoor food premises, such as craft breweries. The specific rules and regulations outlined in this Act state that dogs are allowed in outdoor eating areas of food service premises as long as food is not being prepared in that specific area. Dogs are also allowed in indoor eating areas of food service premises if only low-risk food items are being prepared, and if the dogs are in a separate room where only low-risk or pre-packaged, ready-to-eat food items are served. However, no food manufacturing, processing, or preparation can take place in that room. Dogs are only permitted on patios and in restaurants that have leash-friendly railings nearby.

Quebec's dog-friendly patio rules

Information about dog-friendly patio regulations in Quebec is limited. According to a spokesperson from Quebec's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, pets are generally allowed on patios as long as they stay out of the kitchen area, and dishes remain separate.

Information obtained from a spokesperson from Quebec's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food via a Global News article.

Please note that these regulations may be subject to change, so it's always a good idea to verify the current guidelines with local authorities or the respective provincial departments responsible for health and food safety. And remember, although the rules are set by the provincial government, dog-friendly businesses still have a choice on whether or not they want to allow dogs. It's always a good idea to use free apps like GoDoggo to find out if your dog can actually come.

<![CDATA[New Ferry Options and Pet-Friendly Programs for Dog Owners in BC]]>https://www.godoggo.app/post/new-ferry-options-and-pet-friendly-programs-for-dog-owners-in-bc6482220827aa556d610f6c85Thu, 08 Jun 2023 20:53:51 GMTGoDoggoDog owners rejoice! Two exciting developments in BC's ferry industry are set to make traveling with your furry friends more convenient and enjoyable.

BC Ferries boat in water

The introduction of the Hullo ferry service and the expanded pet pilot program by BC Ferries offer enticing options for dog owners who wish to explore new destinations. In this article, we will delve into the details of these developments, highlighting the benefits they bring to dog owners and their beloved pets.

Introducing the Hullo Ferry

The Hullo ferry service aims to provide a comfortable and convenient travel experience between Nanaimo and Vancouver. Offering tiered pricing options, including "Comfort, Premium, and Business," Hullo caters to various passenger preferences and budgets. With affordable first-trip fares starting at $29.99, passengers can enjoy a range of amenities onboard. The service operates from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily, with additional late-night sailings scheduled after major concerts and sports events. While the Hullo ferry does not accommodate vehicles, it warmly welcomes pets and bicycles, making it an ideal choice for dog owners seeking pet-friendly transportation.

Pet-Friendly Rules on the Hullo Ferry

Hullo recognizes the importance of including pets in the travel experience and has taken measures to ensure their comfort and safety. Furry friends, including cats and dogs that can safely fit on their owners' laps within a carrier, are permitted onboard at no extra cost.

BC Ferries' Expanded Pet Pilot Program

BC Ferries is also making strides in accommodating pets on their vessels. Under their expanded pet pilot program, dogs and cats can now accompany their owners on the outside upper decks of select ferries along three popular routes: Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay, Comox-Powell River, and Earls Cove-Saltery Bay. Pet owners must ensure their dogs are on a one-metre leash, while cats must be kept in travel carriers while on the outer decks. BC Ferries has designated specific stairwells and entrances, marked by paw prints, for accessing the outer decks. Limited elevator access is available for individuals with accessibility needs.

Benefits and Feedback on BC Ferries' Pet Pilot Program

The new pet-friendly policy implemented by BC Ferries allows dog owners to enjoy the scenic views and fresh air on the upper outer decks while traveling. Each owner is permitted to bring up to two dogs, and designated pet areas feature waste bags and water bowls for their convenience. BC Ferries values passenger feedback and encourages travellers and workers to participate in a 60-day survey on the three routes with the expanded pet pilot program. Last year's pilot project on the Earls Cove-Saltery Bay route saw approximately 1,000 pets traveling, with an overwhelmingly positive response of 90 percent approval from survey respondents.

Conclusion

The introduction of the Hullo ferry service and the expanded pet pilot program by BC Ferries present exciting opportunities for dog owners looking to travel with their furry companions. The Hullo ferry offers tiered pricing options and welcomes pets and bicycles, while BC Ferries' pet-friendly program allows dogs and cats on designated upper outer decks. These developments provide dog owners with more choices and enhanced experiences, ensuring that their beloved pets can join them on their journeys. So, pack your bags, grab your pup's leash, and embark on new adventures together!

The warmer weather is finally here and we can’t wait to get out and explore with our dog by our side. But beware, the summer heat can be dangerous for our dogs because they don’t have the same cooling mechanisms as humans.

It’s clear to see when we are hot - we sweat. But dogs cool down by panting. Although dogs do have a few sweat glands in their paws, these glands do little to help in regulating their body temperature.

How do you keep your dog safe during summer?

These are some common things you can do during the hotter months to help keep your dog safe:

Make sure your dog has enough water

This tip might seem like an obvious one but monitoring your dog and their water intake is important. In heat waves, a good idea is to add ice to the water whenever possible and make sure you change the water often. When you are out, bring a water bottle and a portable bowl with you so your furry companion can have a quick drink whenever they are thirsty.

Hydraton Hack: A hydration hack for dogs could involve making homemade frozen treats using dog-friendly ingredients. These treats can help keep your pup hydrated and cool during hot summer days. Some ideas include freezing low-sodium chicken or beef broth, mixing it with water and pouring it into ice cube trays or using silicone molds shaped like paw prints or bones. You can also freeze pieces of dog-friendly fruits like watermelon or blueberries in water for a refreshing and hydrating snack. Just remember to consult with your veterinarian to ensure the ingredients are safe for your specific dog's dietary needs.

Never walk your dog on the hot pavement

Hot pavement can reach scorching temperatures, especially during the summer months. The sensitive paw pads of dogs can easily burn when they come into contact with hot surfaces. Severe burns can occur, causing pain, discomfort, blisters, and even permanent damage.

Always keep in mind that pavement can become significantly hotter than the air temperature. You can check the pavement temperature by placing the back of your hand on it. If it feels too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

Limit exercise on hot days

During the warm and hot days of summer, make sure your dog doesn’t overwork themselves. It can be fun to go on a long hike with your pet, but it can also be too much for them especially if there isn’t any shade. On these days, limit exercise to early morning or evenings when it’s a bit cooler and especially be careful with pets with white-tipped ears because this makes them more susceptible to skin cancer.

Never Leave Your Pet In A Parked Car

You should never leave your pet in a parked car – not even for a second. On a hot day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. On a day that is 30 degrees Celsius, for example, the temperature (even with the windows open) can quickly rise to 40 degrees within 5 minutes. After 30 minutes the temperature can reach 50 degrees. If a dog is exposed to this type of heat, they can suffer organ failure and in some cases even die. If you see a pet left inside a hot vehicle, don’t wait. Call for help immediately.

Keep Your Home Cool

Keep your home's interior temperature within a safe range. Ice packs, damp towels, and fans are excellent tools to help your pup cool down during hot days. Don't be tempted to turn off the A/C to save money when leaving home—just like a parked car, the temperature indoors can quickly soar. Keep the A/C on to create a cool oasis for your beloved pet.

Create a Cool Haven

Enhance your pup's comfort by using blackout curtains to block out excessive sunlight and heat. This simple yet effective method can significantly reduce the temperature and make your home more enjoyable for your dog.

Invest in Paw Care Essentials

Paw care essentials can include things like paw balm, paw wipes, and paw protectors. Paw balm is used to moisturize and protect your dog's paws from drying out or cracking, especially in hot weather or on rough terrain. Paw wipes can be used to clean your dog's paws after outdoor activities, helping to remove dirt, allergens, and other irritants that can cause skin irritation or infection. Paw protectors are boots or socks that provide an additional layer of protection for your dog's paws, especially in extreme weather conditions or on abrasive surfaces.

What is Heat Stroke?

Because dogs often feel the heat more than humans, it can sometimes be hard to tell if your dog is overheated so it’s important to keep a watchful eye on them. Heat stroke occurs when your pet’s body temperature rises above the normal range of 100 to 102.2 degrees.causing your pet’s body to overheat. If your dog suffers from mild heat exhaustion, it can be treated by putting your dog in a cool room. However, a heat stroke means your furry companion will need to be rushed to the veterinarian.

Here are some things you should know and signs of what to look for when it comes to the health of your dog.

What Are The Common Factors For Causing Heat Stroke?

Heatstroke, overheating or heat exhaustion occurs through a number of reasons:

 • Outside temperature (please be aware this doesn’t need to be a sunny day) - anything above 15 degrees celcius/60 degrees farenheit can be dangerous for dogs.

 • High humidity days - even when the temperature is lower

 • Dog has been left in the house all day with no ventilation (open windows/fan) or air conditioning

 • Too much playing and/or for too long

 • Not enough water - either not enough water to access, or not drinking enough

 • Pets left inside of a hot car - cars can heat up to dangerous levels within minutes - never leave your dog in a parked car, even with the windows down, especially on summer days when the air is warm (sunny or cloudy - it doesn’t matter)

What Are The Symptoms Of Heat Stroke?

Heat exhaustion can quickly lead to heat stroke which can quickly be deadly. It’s important to watch for the signs, and if you see any get your dog to the vet immediately.

The most common symptoms of heat stroke are:

 • when a dog pants excessively. (most common symptom)

 • drooling

 • red gums

 • vomiting

 • diarrhea.

In the worst cases, a dog will lose coordination, collapse, or lose consciousness.

What Should You Do If Your Dog Has Heat Stroke?

You should remove the dog from the hot environment immediately and take them to your veterinarian or the nearest emergency animal hospital. On the way to the veterinarian, open all the of your vehicles windows and blast the air conditioning.

Until you can get to the veterinarian:

 • Walk or carry your dog to a well ventilated, cool area.

 • Spray or sponge your dog with cool (not cold) or tepid water especially on the underside.

 • Do not immerse your dog in cold water or use ice.

 • Use a fan to blow cool air on your dog.

 • Give your dog as much cool water to drink as they want but don’t force them to drink.

 • Never give your dog aspirin

How Will A Veterinarian Treat Heat Stroke?

With heatstroke, safe, controlled reduction of your pet’s body temperature is the first priority. Cool water may be poured over the head, stomach, and paws, or cool cloth may be applied to those areas. The dog will likely be hooked up to an IV to replace lost fluids. Sometimes the dog will go on low-concentration oxygen if necessary. Your veterinarian will also likely monitor the dog for secondary complications such as kidney failure, abnormal clotting, and neurologic symptoms.

Final Thoughts

We all love spending the summer outdoors, camping, hiking, and exploring beaches with our furry companions. Because of the increased heat, it’s important to keep your dog safe and healthy during these summer months. If you follow these tips then both you and your dog companion can enjoy the beautiful weather without having to worry about the heat.

Many plants commonly found in gardens are toxic and poisonous to dogs, and if ingested, can cause serious health issues. In this article, we'll discuss the toxic and poisonous plants to avoid and provide tips for creating a safe garden for your dog.

Understanding the Risks of Toxic and Poisonous Plants for Dogs

Dogs are curious creatures that love to explore their surroundings with their noses and mouths. Unfortunately, this curiosity can lead them to consume plants that are harmful to their health. Toxic and poisonous plants can cause a wide range of symptoms in dogs, including vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and in severe cases, organ failure and even death.

Common Plants That Are Toxic and Poisonous to Dogs

Some common plants that are toxic and poisonous to dogs include:

 1. Azaleas and Rhododendrons

 2. Tulips and Daffodils

 3. Lily of the Valley

 4. Sago Palm

 5. Oleander

 6. Foxglove

 7. Hydrangea

 8. Aloe Vera

 9. Castor Bean

 10. Chrysanthemums

It's essential to research any plants you're considering adding to your garden to ensure they are safe for your dog.

Tips for Creating a Safe Garden for Your Dog

Creating a safe garden for your dog is relatively easy and requires some planning and attention to detail. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

 1. Fence Off Your Garden - A fence around your garden can help keep your dog out and prevent them from accidentally ingesting toxic plants.

 2. Know Your Plants - Research the plants in your garden and remove any that are toxic or poisonous to dogs.

 3. Use Raised Beds - Consider planting your garden in raised beds that are out of reach of your dog.

 4. Use Dog-Friendly Pesticides - When using pesticides or fertilizers in your garden, choose dog-friendly options.

 5. Provide Plenty of Water - Make sure your dog has access to plenty of fresh water while outside in the garden.

What to Do If Your Dog Ingests a Toxic or Poisonous Plant

If you suspect your dog has ingested a toxic or poisonous plant, it's essential to act quickly. Contact your veterinarian or a poison control centre immediately for advice on the next steps. Symptoms of toxicity may not appear immediately, so it's essential to monitor your dog's behaviour closely.

In conclusion, creating a safe garden for your dog is crucial to their health and well-being. By knowing which plants are toxic and poisonous and taking steps to prevent your dog from ingesting them, you can enjoy gardening with your furry friend safely.
